Ballarat Beats Psychobilly Winner 2019

Featuring Becca Bam Bam
What state are you from?
Victoria- Melbourne now (Warrnambool originally)
What is your style?
My pinup style is quite eclectic- I love the classic pinup look- but I’m a pop culture fiend (and former cosplayer) so I love to play around with the geekabilly style. And lately I’ve been experimenting with trashabilly and psychobilly and absolutely loving it!
What do you love about your style?
I love how it has helped me love my body. I used to hate clothes shopping, coz it felt like clothes in Target and Kmart didn’t suit me, and I thought that there was something wrong with me!
Since discovering the pinup/reproduction style I have realised that my curves are great and I’ve developed my body confidence- I show off my curves rather than hiding them away in baggy clothing, like I used to do.
How did you discover your style and how long have you been wearing your style?
I’ve always loved anything and everything retro- I grew up on Elvis and Doris Day movies! So when I saw there was a rockabilly festival in Camperdown I convinced my family to go! It was Camperdown Cruise 2015- I owned one dress of the style, and I put on some red lippy! I was mesmerised by the whole event! Von Ruby did my hair and makeup and I felt like a million dollars! My family and I went to watch Miss Camperdown Cruise, and I was hooked!! I was so inspired by the likes of Miss Ivy Anchor, Scarlet Soda, Bambi Lamour, Miss Moyna May- these gals I now call my friends! It was my New Years resolution to make my wardrobe more pinup- and enter a pinup competition! By February I had won my first title of Miss Classique in the 2016 Ballarat Beat! And now my wardrobe is completely pinup!
What are your go to brands?
I’m a huge Lindy Bop fan! Seriously I’ve gotten so many people onto that brand, I should be a spokesperson!
I’ve also been LOVING Vixen by Micheline Pitt- I’ve got so many pieces from that line- I adore everything she brings out!! It’s the perfect blend of cute and attitude that just gets me!
Favourite band or singer?
I have so many!! I love all kinds of music- from Elvis to Misfits!
I really love the 5, 6, 7, 8’s they’re this rad punk band with a 60’s motif! Killer harmonies and chants, and attitude to match!
Also loving Dolly Parton atm
Favourite outfit or item?

Ahhh that’s so tough! I can’t choose one item, but I will choose one style of dress- and that is the wiggle! I’ve only just started embracing that style and it’s so fun!! I have a couple of velvet wiggle dresses, I put them on and I feel so extra!! Great for curves!!

What was the last event you went to while wearing your style?
I wear swing dresses and eyeliner to work everyday- but the last event where I went full pinup would probably have been Burlesque Idol- supporting mega babe Lana Lunacy, who won the competition!!

Do you have any tips or tricks to help other people wanting to dress your style?
Experiment with the style- and don’t be afraid to be a little extra!
Start small- red lipstick and winged eyeliner- and then build it up- a circle skirt with a tee is a good place to start. And then before you know it, you’ll be wearing 8 petticoats and 4 sets of fake eyelashes!
And rollers and a headscarf to work!! (They’re so used to me doing that, they don’t even bat an eyelid now haha)

Motto, quote, future goals or biggest achievement
My motto is be true to you! I tried to do the demure, classic vintage look- but it’s not me!
There are so many avenues you can explore with pinup, so don’t feel like you have to play by the rules- I never follow them!
And if you like skulling booze onstage and pouring slime all over yourself- give psychobilly a go!

I think my biggest achievement would be the time Scarlett (Pearl Del Rey) and I took out the couple’s section of 2018 Ballarat Beat with a noice, different, unusual Pinup Kath & Kim routine! So proud that we were able to make something so uniquely Australian- pinup! Talk about bogan kitsch!!
